JANUARY 19, 2010

Winter 2010

The Canadian Furniture Show was dominated by light colored furniture. This picture shows a transitional white leather sofa. The walls are a vibrant purple with orange geometric shapes on the wall as an accent. Although I wouldn't recommend this in your home, it does show how fabulous a neutral sofa can be with a brilliant wall color. Toss in a second vivid color for your accent pieces and you're in "high" decor fashion.

Acryllics have re-entered home decor. Shown here are a few chair styles that were featured at the furniture show. I thought they were playful and useful. They make great kitchen chairs, accent chairs, bedroom and office seating. I've ordered quite a few so drop by to see these new additions to our furniture line up for this season

Did you Know?

We just returned from the Canadian Furniture show in Toronto. There were a number of surprises for 2010-2011. The big one being the color "white". White leather furniture, white linen or cotton furniture, white tables and chairs, and white accent pieces were shown as the high fashion pieces moving forward this year. Lots of acrylic and shine dominated the show.

The next surprise was that light wood is returning. Lots of exotic woods mixed with acrylic and glass and chairs that were covered in fabulous geometrics or florals. But don’t think that dark wood is out of fashion, indeed not. We saw rich dark wood tables accompanied by chairs covered in very light leather and fabrics. And speaking of tables, glass-glass-glass! Glass table tops with bases in chrome, metal and shaped wood was inspiring to see.

Wall colors ranged from cream and mocha to brilliant pink, orange and purple. Mostly the trend is to a clean and fairly neutral wall color and then add splashes of amazing color. Design is simple and uncluttered with very clean lines. Large pieces of furniture were mostly upholstered in plain fabrics with a linen or tweed look. Smaller pieces like an accent chair were often shown in large florals and geometric patterns, ranging from a soft pallet to a large scale bright color scheme. Accessories are oversized unusual shapes that make a design statement.

The trend is to choose an eclectic mix that you enjoy. Buy new simple large pieces, incorporate some of your existing pieces by repurposing them or repainting or reupholstering them. Choose a few matching pieces to anchor the room, like a sofa and chair and then have fun. Let your personality shine through.
